Hisham Matar returns to Libya in search of the truth about his father, a political dissident who disappeared into Muammar Qaddafi's prison system.
The memoir gives the Africa path a North African perspective on dictatorship, exile, family, memory, and political resistance.
Why I include it
Read this as the Libya chapter of the path, moving from regional conflict to the intimate consequences of authoritarian rule.
