In an alternate America in 2004, historian Martin Neumann lives at Halcyon, the Virginia estate of lawyer and World War II veteran Robert Ableson. President Al Gore is beginning a second term when scientists announce a discovery that could overcome death itself.
As Martin becomes entangled in the Ableson family’s secrets, questions of mortality intersect with the stories people and nations tell about their past. Moving across generations, Halcyon combines alternate history and speculative fiction to examine memory, power, mythmaking, and the consequences of technological change.
Why I include it
New technology can disturb the stories a society tells about itself. Halcyon brings memory and mortality into that question, extending the collection’s interest in how people understand their past.
